TRACING STEVENSON’S STEPS

Saint-Jean-du-Gard is the final stage of the famous author’s journey through the Cévennes region

Robert Louis Stevenson, world renowned for his book Treasure Island, explored our region which he described in his book Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879). Today, the GR 70, renamed the Chemin de Stevenson (Stevenson’s Trail), pays tribute to him. This is a legendary hike for nature lovers, it’s not to be missed under any circumstances!

Maison Rouge

The Museum of the Cévenne Valleys, Maison Rouge, (The Red House) is a famous French museum. It traces the rich history of the Cévennes and Saint-jean-du-Gard.

The Pont du Gard

Not to be missed. This ancient architectural masterpiece dates back more than 2,000 years and it is a UNESCO heritage site. The bridge, built on three levels, was designed to allow a Roman aqueduct to cross the river. It can be admired from every angle, on foot, by bike, from the river... and even from the air!

Caves and Swallow holes

The Cévennes region boasts a unique underground world. In summer, this offers a fun-filled outdoor activity (Trabuc cave, Chauvet 2 cave)

The Cévennes Steam Train

A fun, family activity, the train will take you on journey exploring the Gardon valley between Saint-Jean-du-Gard and Anduze.

Porcini mushrooms, local mushrooms, chestnuts, Pélardon cheese, honey and figs are just some of the delights that you can sample at the many markets that criss-cross the region
